Every July, when the weather is hot and the holiday music feels just a little bit ridiculous, we celebrate one of our favorite unofficial holidays: Christmas in July. It's the perfect excuse to indulge in festive flavors, start thinking about gifts (just a little), and embrace the fact that joy doesn't belong to just one month of the year.

Why Do People Celebrate Christmas in July?

The tradition dates back decades, though nobody can quite agree on exactly where it started. Some say it began at a summer camp in North Carolina in the 1930s. Others point to the simple fact that people in the Southern Hemisphere celebrate Christmas during their summer.

Whatever the origin, the idea caught on because it's fun.

It's a chance to take everything we love about the holidays (without the crowded malls, shipping deadlines, and family arguments) and enjoy it with flip-flops instead of snow boots.
